If you remember the symptoms you had before undergoing a hernia repair in the first place, you know what it feels like when a hernia mesh fails. A hernia mesh failure can occur for many reasons, including mesh migration, mesh shrinkage, mesh erosion, and mesh tearing or rupture. Any of these events can cause complications, including a recurrence of the hernia.
The symptoms you feel when your hernia mesh fails include pain, tenderness, swelling, and a bulge in the affected area, especially when you are straining. If you have these symptoms after a hernia repair procedure, reach out to your doctor to discuss your options right away.
Implantable hernia mesh patches cover the herniated area, effectively closing the hole to prevent your intestines or other organs from pressing through it. When these patches fail and the hernia recurs, it can feel very much like your original symptoms because the same thing is happening to your body again. The hole is re-opened, and your organs can once again press against or through it.
This causes symptoms, including:
Hernia mesh implant complications can also cause new, more significant symptoms related to mesh migration or another issue. This may include:
Any of these symptoms or complications could be serious, so it is important to contact your doctor right away. Without prompt treatment, you could suffer lasting damage.

Your doctor will likely be able to examine the area where your hernia occurred and determine if the patch failed. In some cases, your doctor may request a computerized tomography (CT) scan or other medical imaging of the area to rule out serious problems that require emergency care.
If the hernia is small and you are not in too much pain, your doctor may want to observe you for a while and see if your condition worsens. In general, though, hernia mesh failure requires surgical treatment.
Your surgeon will likely attempt to remove the old patch, although this is not always possible. Then, they will repair the hernia again. They may use a similar patch, a different type of patch, or opt for a traditional repair that does not use hernia mesh.
There are thousands of people who suffered hernia mesh complications already participating in multidistrict litigation (MDL) against mesh manufacturers. In the ongoing lawsuits, the victims allege that the manufacturers failed to keep them safe from undue pain and failed to provide adequate warnings about the risks associated with these procedures.
They believe hernia mesh is a dangerous and defective medical device, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) agrees with them—many hernia mesh patches have been recalled for these very reasons.
If your hernia mesh failed or you required revision surgery for any reason, we can take legal action on your behalf. You may be able to join in the ongoing mass tort, join a new mass tort, or pursue a claim on your own and try to hold the manufacturer of your mesh implant liable.
