Street Racing Airman Kills Pedestrian, Continues Driving Before Crashing Into Apartments

Every state in the country has laws against drag or street racing. In addition to substantial fines, street racing can lead to severe injuries or outcomes that are even more tragic. Street or drag racing not only puts the lives of those who are involved at risk; they can endanger the lives of innocent bystanders.

Albuquerque Police believe that an incident involving street racing left one female pedestrian dead and three other people critically injured.  Military.Com reported that the accident happened on March 20th and involves at least one airman stationed at the Kirtland Air Force Base.

The accident happened Saturday night at approximately 7:30 p.m. just a short distance from the base. Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Simon Drobik described the scene as possibly being the worst accident anyone has ever seen.

Eyewitnesses to the crash told police investigators that two vehicles had been street racing, heading northbound on Louisiana. One of the cars attempted to pass the other and struck a woman who was walking in the intersection. They kept going until they crashed into the Phoenix Rising Apartment Complex.

Police say that it was fortunate that no one was inside the building at the time of the crash. Residents of the complex had stated that they had seen the car strike and kill the female pedestrian.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is still unclear how the three others were critically injured.  Authorities also have not released the name of the female victim, or the names and current conditions of those injured.

Though Military officials have not stated whether the airman involved was driving or a passenger, Grusnick did say in a statement that the airman was a member of the 58th Special Operations Wing stationed at the Kirtland Base. Officials at Kirtland Air Force Base have said they intend to cooperate with the Albuquerque Police Department regarding the matter.
