Tucson, Ariz. (Jan. 17, 2013) – As a Tucson lawmaker proposes raising liability coverage required for motorists, personal injury attorneys at Zanes Law remind drivers to explore all of their options after an accident.
“Now more than ever, drivers must be aware of all of the consequences when they’ve been in an accident, especially if they’ve been injured or their property is damaged by someone else,” said Doug Zanes, CEO/Responsible Attorney at Zanes Law.
A bill being proposed by state Rep. Ethan Orr (R-Tucson), would require raising the minimum liability insurance from $15,000 to $25,000; coverage for injuries to multiple victims from $30,000 to $50,000 and at least $20,000 coverage for property damage.
Zanes said the proposed liability requirements mean that injured motorists would be able to recover more after an accident. Zanes noted that Arizona liability limits haven’t changed in four decades, while costs for everything from replacing an automobile to hospital stays have soared.
“Insurance companies are quick to contact a motorist after an accident with a settlement offer,” Zanes said. “Remember, they work for the insurance company, which has one goal: to settle your case for the least amount of money possible. What may seem like a fair offer to you could fall far short of any amount of money you need and that you can get through an attorney’s help.”
Those worried that their insurance rates will go up if they pursue a claim should rest easy, Zanes said.
“Simply because an injured person pursues a claim doesn’t mean their insurance rates will increase,” Zanes said. “It’s when a person’s negligent or wrongful acts cause injury that their own insurance premiums are raised.”
Zanes offered these tips for anyone involved in an accident:
- Call 911 immediately
- Obtain the police report number
- Exchange name, address, license plate number and insurance information with anyone else involved in the accident
- Take pictures of the accident and damage
- Seek medical treatment
- Contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss your options.
