According to statistics, accidents which involve wrong-way drivers happen more often between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. One such incident unfolded recently with tragic results early Wednesday morning and has left four people dead.
Fox10 in Phoenix reports that the fiery and deadly crash happened on Interstate 10 approximately 75 miles west of Phoenix between milepost 67 and 66. The Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a statement that a Nissan pickup truck was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes near Centennial.
911 dispatchers received a call around 1:00 a.m. reporting the wrong-way driver. Fox 10 reports that the accident happened just 10 minutes later when the truck struck a passenger van head-on, killing the driver of the pickup truck and three people inside the van. When authorities arrived in the desolate area, all four were pronounced dead at the scene.
Interstate 10 was closed for a number of hours while investigators worked to determine the cause of the deadly crash.
DPS Trooper, Cameron Lee said that the vehicles had caught fire and the bodies were not identifiable. There were no skid marks on the road so neither vehicle hit their brakes before impact. Alcoholic beverage containers were found at the scene. Lee said that alcohol is likely to have played a role.
The cause of the crash is still currently under investigation.
