ADOT To Try New Road Markings To Reduce Speeding

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced this week that they are planning to take a slightly different approach to try to get drivers who are speeding to slow down.

ABC 15 in Phoenix reported on Monday, October 7th that on a stretch of Route 347 located between Riggs Road and I-10 traffic engineers are planning to place large white decals on the dark paved road, showing drivers the posted speed limit in the area as well as the signs that drivers are used to seeing.

Doug Nintzel, with ADOT, told NBC that he hopes the decals will get the attention of drivers and potentially get them to slow down their speed in an area where the speed limit drops and that have had numerous crashes in the past. 

“The intersections along this particular highway would be locations that we’re concerned with because those tend to be the areas where you’re going to have more crashes because those are the conflict points,” Nintzel said.

While still in the early stages, ADOT engineers have also been adding the number of the highway to on-ramps to let drivers know where they are and help them to navigate our state’s roadways better. This, according to Nintzel, is something that motorists have found particularly useful. 

It can be some time before crash data will show ADOT officials whether or not the test of these pavement decals help get drivers to slow down and lower the number of speed-related crashes in the area.
