Weatherproofing Your Car and Home for Winter (Yes, Even in Arizona)
In 2015, 143 people suffered injuries on snowy Arizona roads, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Additionally, the U.S. Fire Administration reported that 28 people died in residential fires. Prepare for these and other winter risks when you weatherproof your vehicle and home.
In Your Car
Hot Arizona roads can damage rubber tires and increase blowouts. Inspect your tires for damage, check the tread depth and properly inflate them. Consider installing all-weather radials for improved traction.
Batteries can quickly corrode and lose fluids during Arizona summers. Charge the battery before you drive your car this winter, and clean the battery’s terminals.
Oil, antifreeze, brake and washer fluids help your vehicle operate properly, so fill them now. Top off your gas tank regularly, too.
Improve your vehicle’s stopping ability when you maintain the brakes: A mechanic can replace worn or warped brakes.
Bonus tip: Ensure your headlights, hazard lights and heater work properly.
At Home
Before you turn on the furnace for the first time, hire a professional to clean it. Remember to check and clean the filters and chimney, too.
Windy winter weather can break tree branches and limbs. Trim any trees to reduce property damage and other risks.
Add an extra layer of insulation to your attic and basement walls to improve warmth and energy efficiency. Wrap water pipes to prevent bursts, and install weatherstripping around windows and doors.
Bonus tip: Stock a working fire extinguisher on every floor of your home, and know how to use them.
