A Fatal Crash Involving Several Vehicles Leaves One Dead

Tucson authorities have arrested a suspected DUI teen driver in connection to a fatal motorcycle crash involving a stolen car, which happened on Wednesday, May 13th.

KVOA News in Tucson reported on their website that the fatal crash happened at the intersection of North Camino de la Tierra and West Tres Nogales Road.

Eyewitnesses to the crash say that a white 2017 Lincoln Towncar was headed northbound on Camino de La Tierra when the driver attempted to pass a blue 20178 Toyota Camry in a no-passing zone.  At the same time, a silver 1999 Mercedes Benz was heading southbound on Camino de la Tierra.

Seeing the oncoming car, the driver of the Lincoln swerved back into the northbound lane and clipped the Toyota on the rear driver’s side, causing it to spin out of control.

The Toyota struck a dirt embankment on the west side of the roadway.  The Lincoln sideswiped the Mercedes Benz as the two vehicles passed one another.  The driver of the Lincoln continued heading northbound until it came up behind a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle and rear-ended the motorcyclist, 61- year old David M.Wampole. The Lincoln pushed the motorcycle and Wampole approximately 75 yards before coming to a stop.

The female driver of the Lincoln then got out of her vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot.  Police officers located her a short distance away from the crash scene and placed under arrest.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene and transported Wampole to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Officials say he died the following morning.

Authorities have identified the driver of the Lincoln as 16-year-old Haley S. Ohmsatte. She was charged with several counts of aggravated assault, endangerment, auto theft., criminal damage, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol.  Ohmsatte is currently being held in the Pima County Jail.

Officials are expected to upgrade Ohmsatte’s charges following Mr.Wampole’s death.
