Multi-Car Chain Reaction Collision Leaves 1 Seriously Injured

In Arizona, as in many other parts of the country, our highways and roads become more congested over time. In addition to motorists having longer commute times, more vehicles on the road mean an increased chance of getting into an accident.

A multi-car, chain reaction collision in Tucson last month involved two Border Patrol vehicles, and four other passenger cars have left at least one person critically injured. Tucson.com reported that the six-vehicle collision happened on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 16th near the intersection of Alvernon Way and Irvington Road in south Tucson sometime around 5:00 p.m.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement to the media that a man driving a red SUV heading northbound on Alvernon Way rear-ended one of a Border Patrol pickup truck. The impact sent the first cruiser into a passenger vehicle which then struck the second Border Patrol vehicle. Two additional vehicles were also involved in the crash.

The identity of the driver in the SUV who caused the crash was later released in an updated report by the news station, KOLD as being 25-year-old Richard Santana.  Santana was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. One of the Border Patrol Agents was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators believe that while the cause of the multi-vehicle accident is still unknown, speed may have played a role in the initial crash. The accident is still currently under investigation.
