Traffic Stop For Speeding Leads To Mother Losing Custody

Being a parent or guardian of a child is a big responsibility. Because they are not able to fend for themselves, adults need to be depended upon to ensure that a child is properly housed, fed, and kept safe from potential accidents is important. Part of that is the use of proper child safety or booster seats to secure them while riding in a motor vehicle.

According to a story appearing on the AZ Family website, a woman was arrested by Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers on Monday after they discovered a 1-month-old infant in the back seat during a traffic stop. DPS issued a statement saying that Sophia Garibo, 18, had been traveling eastbound on State Route 202 in Tempe when troopers pulled her over for speeding. Troopers clocked Garibo going 88 miles per hour before being pulled over.

Garibo heeded the DPS lights and pulled over her vehicle. During the stop, the trooper asked Garibo her name and noticed the infant in the back of the car lying on top of a seatbelt.

Troopers checked records and found an outstanding arrest warrant for Garibo from the Chandler City Court. Garibo was arrested at the scene. She was later booked into the Maricopa County Jail and faces the charge of child endangerment in addition to the prior arrest warrant in Chandler City.

A Maricopa County Court granted custody of the1-month-old to the baby’s grandmother.

Garibo was later released and is due to appear in court in mid-July.
