ABC 15 in Phoenix reports that the crash happened near Val Vista Drive and Hunt Highway on Sunday, March 29th, just after 5:00 a.m. where a van flipped over.
Investigators with the Chandler Police Department have identified the driver as 21-year-old Michelle Andrade. Andrade was heading northbound on Vel Vista when the van left the pavement and hit a dirt shoulder. In an attempt to stabilize the vehicle and prevent an accident, Andrade overcorrected the vehicle, causing the van to roll over instead.
Two of the five children in the van were ejected from the van in the single-vehicle crash. Those two children, along with a third child, were rushed to an area hospital for treatment. All three children are currently listed in serious condition.
Chandler Police officers at the scene of the crash detected that Andrade had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time, but it is unclear if she had a previous DUI record. She was placed under arrest on suspicion of DUI and several additional charges, which include endangerment and aggravated assault. There are still some questions waiting to be resolved.
Sgt. McClimans, a spokesperson with the Chandler Police Department, told reporters that the incident is still currently under investigation.
We send our prayers and sincere hopes for the children’s speedy recovery and their families’ peace at this time.
