Whether someone is running late or has a general disregard for the law, speeding can be dangerous and deadly to both the driver and others who share the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA) estimates that there are thousands of deaths on U.S. highways that are attributed to speeding, and the failure to adhere to speed limits contributes up to one-third of all traffic-related fatalities. According to the NHTSA’s latest figures, there were an estimated 9,378 speeding-related deaths in 2018.
ABC 15 reports that Phoenix Police investigators believe that speeding probably played a role in a fatal, single-vehicle crash that happened on Tuesday, April 14th. Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle did not survive.
According to the report, the accident happened at approximately 7:45 p.m. when police were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Thunderbird Road and 35th Avenue.
Investigators say that a white sedan was traveling northbound on 31st Avenue when it collided with a light pole on the corner of 31st Avenue and Voltaire. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the crash. It is not yet clear as to whether alcohol or drugs may have been a factor.
The sole occupant of the vehicle has been identified as 36-year-old Damien Turnidge, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
While the fatal crash is still currently under investigation, Phoenix Police officers who responded to the scene believe that speed likely played a role in the crash.
