Teaching kids how to drive and the rules of the road is often something that is left to parents to undertake. Having an experienced driver show an inexperienced one what to do when behind the wheel is how a significant number of drivers first learned how to drive.
ABC 15 in Phoenix reports that what should have been a simple driving lesson between a parent and child has resulted in the death of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin mom who was teaching her 17-year-old son to drive. Authorities believe that the fatal crash is the result of a possible road rage incident on Friday, August 30th.

The Milwaukee Police Department issued a statement saying that the mother and son had been conducting a driving lesson that resulted in a minor accident. The mother, Tracey Smith, 46, who was a 23-year veteran of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, got out of their vehicle to speak to the driver who had crashed into their car. Smith and the other driver got into an argument, and the other driver shot and killed her during the encounter.
Milwaukee police said in their statement issued on Monday that, “Words were exchanged and the driver of the striking vehicle pulled out a firearm and shot the passenger (Smith) .”
The suspect then fled the scene. Smith’s son then rushed his mother to the hospital where doctors pronounced her dead as the result of a gunshot wound.
Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection to the road-rage incident and Smith’s death. His identity has not been released pending formal charges being filed.
