A spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department said in a statement that a family of four were riding their bicycles single file along 70th Avenue in the direction of traffic when Jones, who was on the wrong side of the road, drove his Jeep over a child trailer that was attached to one of the bicycles. The mother who was riding with the group was knocked off of her bike by Jones’ vehicle. Eyewitnesses say that Jones barely missed also hitting a five-year-old girl who was also out riding with the family on her bicycle.
Immediately following the crash, Jones drove his vehicle off the roadway and into some nearby landscaping. Good Samaritans attempted to render first aid and CPR before a Glendale Police officer arrived on the scene.
Paramedics with the Glendale Fire Department arrived at the scene and rushed the three-year-old toddler to an area hospital for treatment. The child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the medical center.
Police investigating the fatal crash found Jones’ vehicle a short distance from the crash site at 70th Avenue and Villa Theresa Drive.
Jones told officers that he had “drifted too far to the left’ when he jerked the steering wheel sharply to the right. Jones told investigators he felt when he struck gravel but saw or heard nothing else related to the fatal accident.
Jones is being held on the charges of manslaughter, failure to stop after an accident involving injury or death, and other related charges.
