A Bicyclist Was Killed In A Traffic Accident At Night

When walking or riding a bicycle at night, wearing appropriate gear can often be the difference between life and death. Drivers often have trouble seeing pedestrians and bicyliclists at night. As such, it is best to wear bright colored clothing or reflective gear.

The Phoenix Police Department released the name of a female bicyclist who was killed by a driver. The driver did not adhere to the traffic signal on Sunday night.

AZ Central reported on its website that 35-year-old Nicole Hicks was riding her bicycle on the night of Sunday, May 10th, near the intersection of 32nd street and Broadway Road when she was struck by a truck hauling a horse trailer.

According to Sgt. Ann Justus, spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department, Hicks was struck while she was in the crosswalk of the intersection when the driver of a pickup truck and a trailer ran a red light.

Emergency crews with the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the scene of the accident. Hicks was rushed to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Authorities say that the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene of the fatal crash.  Investigating officers determined that neither speed or impairment appears to have played any role in the accident. The driver was released by police officers.  The identity of the driver was not released at the time of the report.

The accident is still currently under investigation. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver of the pickup truck.
