Wrong-Way Crash On The Loop 101 Kills Driver

According to a report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the majority of wrong-way crashes end in fatality. Approximately 360 people die each year in wrong-way crashes on our nation’s roadways with 60% of those fatal accidents involving alcohol or drug impairment.

The AZ Family reports that a wrong-way crash on the Loop  101 has ended the life a young woman near Glendale on Tuesday. 

The crash happened at approximately 11:312 p.m. when a motorist driving a Chevy Malibu Sedan entered the Loop heading northbound in the southbound lanes.   A spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) said in a statement that the driver of the Malibu struck a Nissan Sedan head-on with a third vehicle was also involved in the crash.

Authorities have identified the victim in the crash as Laiquan Lemon, 20, of Goodyear. She is reported to have died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle that was struck by the Malibu was unhurt in the crash.

The driver of the Malibu was described as a 22-year-old woman. She was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. So far, authorities have not yet released her identity and have not yet filed charges in the case

The accident is still currently under investigation.  DPS detectives have not yet determined if impairment by drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
