A candidate who is running for a position on the Tempe City Council was injured in a multi-vehicle crash that also involved a school bus last week.
According to a report filed on the AZ Central website, on Tuesday, December 10th, Marc Norman, 52, who is running for City Council, was driving eastbound on Southern Avenue heading toward Tempe High School. At approximately 12:45 p.m., Norman was behind a school bus that stopped at a railroad crossing near Kyrene Road.
Both Norman and the bus in front of him were stopped when a dark blue Jeep Wrangler rear-ended his 2009 Pontiac, sending him and his vehicle up under the rear-end of the bus.
Emergency crews were able to extricate Norman from his vehicle with just cuts and bruises. He was taken to an area hospital to be checked out. After the accident, Norman says he is suffering from some back pain and is wearing a neck brace as a precaution.
The driver of the Jeep told investigators that he had not expected the school bus to stop at the railroad tracks and because he was focused on the green light in front of all three of the vehicles. Tempe Police Detective Greg Bacon told reporters that the school bus stopping at the railroad tracks is required by law.
Norman told AZ Family that the accident was totally unexpected. A mere few inches to the right of where his car collided with the bus, and he might not have survived.
The musician and city council hopeful says that he intends to take some time from the campaign trail in order to recover. The experience has made him contemplative and he’s grateful to be alive.
“The fact that I could get out of my car and walk away from that was a complete miracle,” Norman said.
