What are the busiest accident days?

Have you ever wondered what are the busiest accident days? When the most or least amount of accidents happen so you could avoid that time, that day, that street?!
Many of us who commute a ton ponder this and how to avoid massive traffic (We hear our Phoenix people groaning… Tucson there is no such things as traffic!)
Every year Arizona Motor Vehicle Division publishes a public crash report of various facts regarding car crashes for that year (Take look here for 2013 crash facts!).
The report covers just about everything from historical trends to crash descriptions to safety devices, to pedestrian and pedalcyclist crashes to motorcycle crashes!
The most recent report on crash facts comes from the year 2013 and we were curious about when exactly car crashes happen most often… what time of day and how often…
Here is a breakdown of what the report had to say about the busiest accident days in Arizona:
|PEAK MONTH FOR ALL CRASHES||OCTOBER|
|PEAK DAY FOR ALL CRASHES||FRIDAY|
|PEAK HOUR FOR ALL CRASHES||5 PM – 6 PM|
|PEAK MONTH FOR FATAL CRASHES||MAY|
|PEAK DAY FOR FATAL CRASHES||SATURDAY|
|PEAK DATE FOR ALL CRASHES IN 2013||NOVEMBER 22ND (737 CRASHES)|
|PEAK DATE FOR FATAL CRASHES IN 2013||FEBRUARY 2ND AND MARCH 31ST (8 CRASHES)|
|PEAK HOUR FOR ALCOHOL RELATED CRASHES||2 AM – 3 AM|
|PEAK DAY FOR MOTORCYCLE CRASHES||SATURDAY|
|PEAK HOUR FOR FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASHES||5 PM – 6 PM|
Note: These numbers represent the total number of fatalities and injuries in crashes where the violation “speed too fast for conditions” or “exceeded lawful speed” was marked on the crash form.
Were you surprised by the busiest accident days? The times of day, day of the week or month that various crashes occurred?
Some have noted that days like Friday when everyone is rushing to get home and peak hours for alcohol related crash between 2am-3am seem obvious – people rushing to get home to the weekend on Friday and irresponsible people leaving the local bars at 2am as they close up shop.
We also are aware of patterns and flows of our cities because we commute them everyday…
For instance you know that for the next two weeks not to go down a specific road because there is construction and additional debris from such work – better to avoid an accident or flying rocks to the windshield.
You know that in Phoenix, traffic begins at 3:30p sharp not 5p like so many would like to believe. And we know that no matter the weather and no matter day and time, you NEVER “tailgate” or follow too closely another driver because you don’t know who’s behind you (and not paying attention) and more importantly who’s in front of you and not paying attention!
Regardless, these statistics can help us navigate the streets and highways of Arizona a little more presently and a lot more safely.
