Zanes Law Distributes $25,000 in School Supplies to Tucson-Area Teachers
Firm’s seventh annual school supply giveaway helped support 450 dedicated teachers and their students with much needed pencils, notebooks, and more, Zanes Law reports.
The average public school teacher today spends about $500 of their own money annually on school supplies, according to the Education Market Association. With Arizona ranking 49th among the states in terms of per-student funding, Zanes Law is helping to fill the gap.
The firm’s most recent Community Service drive had it providing 450 teachers in the Tucson area with much needed notebooks, pencils, scissors, and other school supplies. As the seventh annual giveaway of its kind, the highly successful August 5 event saw the distribution of approximately $25,000 in supplies that will help support students and their teachers.
“Teachers are some of the most dedicated, selfless, and underappreciated professionals of all,” said Zanes Law founder Douglas Zanes. “All across the country every year, teachers dip into their own savings to buy school supplies for their students. This problem is especially acute in Arizona, where school funding per student is almost at the bottom of the list. We’re proud to be able to support Tucson-area teachers and their students through our annual school supply giveaways. We’re happy to say that our most recent drive was our most successful yet.”

Last month, Oklahoma teacher Teresa Danks made national news by panhandling for money to buy school supplies for her students. Aiming to raise awareness about the funding challenges faced by educators nationwide, the third-grade teacher at Grimes Elementary School in Tulsa struck a chord with passersby who remembered how much their own dedicated teachers had done for them.
With Danks estimating that she spends up to $3,000 of her $35,000 salary each year on school supplies for her own classroom, teachers all across the country regularly make similar sacrifices. As strained state and local budgets put even more pressure on school funding, teachers increasingly feel compelled to pay for the important educational supplies that many students’ families would not be able to afford themselves.

This funding gap is especially pronounced in Arizona. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, average funding per student statewide ranked slightly above the national average through the 1980s. Since then, it has plummeted, with the state’s 2013 total of $8,616 coming in far below the nationwide mean of $12,552 and putting it in 49th place.
