Practice the Phoenix Super Bowl Motto: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk
January 30, 2015
With less than a week left until Super Bowl XLIX, it’s time to make sure your plan for the weekend will ensure a fun and safe time, without getting a DUI. With such a large occasion happening right here in Phoenix, Arizona, our home state is going to be filled with drivers who aren’t familiar with the streets and many who are driving while intoxicated, leading to dangerous driving conditions.
Super Bowl related events have been ongoing throughout the city all month long, but especially during this weekend, excitement and commotion will fill the city. Many restaurants and bars around town are having drink specials for fans that can leave them inebriated and away from their homes and hotel rooms, adding to the amount of intoxicated drivers on the road. Many people will start drinking early or may remain drunk from the night before, leaving them impaired through the next morning. And that’s all before the game actually takes place…so be aware!

Experts are predicting a lot of suspenseful moments on the field as the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks face off this weekend in Phoenix. Nothing compares with the biggest gridiron American football game of the year. Die-hard fans might even take the Super Bowl XLIX title as a matter of life and death.
But the truth is the trip home from the game could truly turn out to be a life-altering experience if you drive drunk or ride with an intoxicated driver. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2012 there were 10,322 people killed in alcohol impaired driving crashes in the United States, counting for 31 percent of all crash fatalities in the nation.1 NHTSA also reported 43 percent of all traffic fatalities on Super Bowl Sunday (and the early hours of the following morning) in 2012 were caused by drunk driving, compared to an average of 31 percent for the year as a whole.2
On February 1st, do not become a tragic Super Bowl statistic. Spend your game day in Arizona having fun with no accidents or occurrences by following these tips:
- If you plan on drinking, leave your keys at home so you do not feel tempted to drive and then get a DUI.
- Make a game plan that includes a sober driver – a friend or family member who is NOT DRINKING AT ALL.
- When you ride home with a sober driver, wear your seatbelt. Remember, there are bound to be other impaired drivers on the road.
- If everyone plans on drinking, take a taxi to and from your destination – the cost is unmatchable to the priceless value of your life or another’s.
- Don’t let others drive drunk. Find ways for them to get home safely, too. We don’t want anyone to get a DUI.
If you have (admirably) volunteered to be the designated driver, follow these safe and simple tips:
- Step up to the plate and stay completely sober. The reality is once you are behind the wheel, you are taking others people’s lives into your hands.
- Wear your seatbelt and make all of your passengers do the same.
- Brag about your volunteerism on social media. Spread the motto “fans don’t let fans drive drunk.” Use #designateddriver. People will respond positively and follow you.
- If someone you know is intoxicated, take their keys early. They will thank you later, guaranteed.
- Even if it takes more than one trip, plan accordingly to get EVERYONE home safe.
Play a key role this Super Bowl weekend as a sober, designated driver—keep our Arizona streets safe. Or watch how much you consume and eat plenty to make sure you and all of your fellow fans take taxis and are safe before and after the game. Act responsibly and make the winning play this weekend!
