According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed in accidents than any other type of motor vehicle. It doesn’t matter what kind or size of motorcycle someone rides, the data has consistently shown that wearing a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet can save a life. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by 69%. In 2016, it was estimated that 1,859 lives of motorcyclists were saved by helmets.
A biker was thrown from his vehicle in a car-motorcycle collision in west Phoenix just last month. The AZ Central website reports that on March 16th a crash between a motor vehicle and a dirt bike has left a 20-year-old motorcyclist who wasn’t wearing a helmet in extremely critical condition.

The accident happened near Broadway Road and South 63rd Avenue. Investigators report that the biker failed to yield and broadsided a Nissan Altima sedan. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike onto the asphalt. The dirt bike kept going until it collided with a Toyota Camry being driven by a woman who was with three boys ranging in age from 10 to 15 years old.
The motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital via ambulance. Authorities say he is listed in extremely critical condition. No one else was injured in the crash.
So far police have not said if speed was a factor in the crash or if the motorcyclist was impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time. So far, no charges have been filed in connection to the crash. The accident is still currently under investigation.
