New Car Insurance Minimums in Arizona
July 16, 2020
Drivers in Arizona will now have to spend more money if they want to drive. On July 1, new legislation went into effect that increases the amount of coverage necessary for auto insurance policies.
The bill, which was signed last year by Gov. Doug Ducey, now requires that owners of cars and trucks must have a minimum of $25,000 in liability insurance for one person’s injury or death, $50,000 for multiple people’s injuries or deaths, and $15,000 for property damage. Previously the minimums were $15,000, $30,000, and $10,000 respectively.
Increased Costs of Care and Repair
Prior to the increase, Arizona had some of the lowest minimum requirements in the U.S. A big reason for the increase in minimums is the increased costs of medical care and auto repair.
Sen. Lupe Contreras (D-Avondale) explained that for a small amount of money more each month, it would help to actually protect people and their property. He said that many vehicles on the road couldn’t be replaced for the previous $10,000 minimum. If the damage would cost more than that the at-fault driver would be responsible for paying it – but may not actually have the money to do so.

Opposition of the Bill
The changes were not met with unanimous approval. Many who opposed the bill shared their concern that the increased costs would make insurance much less affordable and much more difficult for those who make less money.
Without being able to afford the new minimum coverage, it may result in some drivers electing to eliminate their coverage all together. Since the new minimums are now mandated by the state, those who are found not to be abiding by them will face a minimum fee of $500.
It’s important to note that those who already purchase more coverage will likely remain unaffected by the change. Rather, those who had purchased the bare minimum will now be impacted.
