Mother And Son Injured By Alleged Drunk Driver In Pedestrian Accident

The leading cause of accidents which result in either severe injury or death in the United States can be blamed on those who choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A Phoenix mother and her 8-year-old son were injured while they were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk in Phoenix on Saturday

ABC 15 in Phoenix reported on its website that the crash happened at the intersection of 24th Street and Van Buren Street. A vehicle was making a left turn from Van Buren onto 24th when the driver collided with the woman and boy.

The entire incident was witnessed by officers with the Phoenix Police Department who were stopped at the intersection at the time.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene and transported the woman and her son to an area hospital for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries.  Authorities have not yet released their identities or current conditions.

The legal limit in every state that anyone can when operating a motor vehicle is 0.08 percent. Driver, 58-year-old Abe F. Mejia, remained at the scene of the injury accident.  Police officers administered field sobriety tests and arrested Mejia at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.8%.

Mejia was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail. No further information has been released at this time.
