Girl Chasing Ice Cream Truck Struck By Car

It’s a fact that sometimes when children want something, they can act impetuously and put their own safety at risk.  Such a situation arose on Wednesday of last week when a 10-year-old Phoenix girl was struck by a car as she and another friend were attempting to catch up with an ice cream truck.

Detective Luis Samudio of the Phoenix Police Department told NBC’s 12 News that the incident happened when the girl, who was initially identified as being 9-years-old, and her friend were crossing the street near the intersection of Missouri Avenue and 21st Avenue. The girl was struck by a car that was traveling eastbound in Missouri Avenue and rendered unconscious.

Emergency crews with the Phoenix Fire Department arrived and treated the girl at the scene of the crash. She eventually regained consciousness.  She was transported to an area hospital for treatment with what police described as “extremely critical condition.”

Doctors later determined that the girl suffered a broken leg and other non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be ok.

Detective Samudio said that the female driver of the vehicle that struck the little girl remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the police.  It is not known whether speed nor impairment appear to have played any role in the incident. Police are still investigating at this time. So far, the driver has not been cited.
