Two Pedestrian Crashes Happen Halloween Morning

Two separate crashes involving pedestrians in the early morning hours of Halloween happened in Tucson.

KOLD in Tucson reports that the first crash happened at the intersection of East Poorman Road and South Houghton Avenue at approximately 4:45 a.m. when a male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing the street.

A spokesperson for the Tucson Police Department said in a statement to KOLD that the pedestrian who is in his 30’s was conscious and alert when emergency crews arrived on the scene.  He was transported to an area hospital’s intensive care unit with life-threatening injuries. Police say that the driver in that crash remained at the scene of the accident.

The second crash happened a few hours later at approximately 7:00 a.m. on East Irvington and South Greenway Drive, where Daniel A. Lopez, 62, was struck by a vehicle.

Emergency crews from the Tucson Fire Medics arrived on the scene and transported Lopez to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Lopez passed away on Thursday morning as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident.

Detectives from Tucson Police’s Traffic Division were called to the scene to investigate. Witnesses at the scene and police say that a blue 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck had been heading eastbound on Irvington Road approaching South Greenway Drive when he struck Lopez, who was crossing the intersection.

There was no marked crosswalk at the intersection, and the driver of the pickup truck had just turned left when he hit Lopez.  The driver stopped his vehicle immediately and stayed at the scene. Police have determined that alcohol impairment was not a factor in the crash.

The accident is still currently under investigation. Currently, no charges have been filed in the case.
