Pedestrian Hit-And-Run Kills One, Leaves Boy In Critical Condition

A hit-and-run crash in Chandler has left one person dead and a 12-year-old boy in extremely critical condition.

The AZ Family reported on its website that the accident happened on at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Monday, October 21st, at the intersection of Alma School Road and Erie Street. An SUV struck the man and boy while they were in the crosswalk and did not stop at the scene.

Brian Merrion, one of the witnesses to the incident, said he heard the thump of a car hitting something and then a scream. “I came out a few minutes later to look, and I just saw a couple people in the street,” Merrion told reporters. 

There were several Good Samaritans at the scene, attempting to help the two victims. One was performing CPR on the man while others tried to help the boy. 

According to a statement issued by the Chandler Police Department, the man was pronounced dead at the scene while the boy was rushed to an area hospital in extremely critical condition. 

The names of the victims have not yet been released by the authorities pending notification of family. 

Police investigators said that the driver of the SUV continued to head northbound on Alma School Road.  The only description of the vehicle is that it was a dark SUV and would likely have significant front end damage consistent to such a collision.

Understandably, the authorities want to find the hit-and-run driver in the case as soon as possible. Seth Tyler, with the Chandler Police Department, told AZ Family that the damage to the vehicle would have likely prevented it from being much further after the crash.  “There could be radiator damage, or there could be other damage where the vehicle lost fluids,” Tyler said.
