Drunk Driver Crashes Into Quad Rider, Rider Heavily Injured Despite Helmet

Alcohol-related crashes account for one of the leading causes of fatalities on Arizona’s roadways. According to a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2015, an estimated 272 deaths occurred on our state’s roadways, and thousands more were injured because a driver chose to get behind the wheel with a blood-alcohol level (BAC) higher than the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Such a DUI crash happened in Tucson last month, leaving a teen rider on a quad with life-threatening injuries. KOLD Channel 13 reports that the accident occurred on the night of August 29th at the intersection of Wilmot Road and Interstate 10. The driver of a pickup truck struck the teen driver of the all-terrain vehicle. The teen had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The teen was transported from the scene to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Showing signs of alcohol impairment, the driver of the pickup truck was arrested at the scene of the crash. The driver also had a small child in the vehicle with him at the time of the accident.

Authorities have not released the name of the driver of the pickup. He was taken into custody and booked into the Pima County Jail on multiple felony charges which include DUI and child endangerment. Additional files may also be filed in the case.
