Driver In Fatal Canal Crash Arrested

A driver had been taken into custody for their alleged role in a fatal crash last month.

KTAR News in Phoenix reported that the crash that happened on Thursday, June 27th at approximately 11:00 p.m. when Kensley C. Dayzie, 26, was driving his vehicle near 35th Avenue and Durango Street when his Chevrolet Impala left the road and crashed into a nearby Phoenix canal. With him at the time was 27-year-old Daria Quimayousie.

Emergency crews from the Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene at approximately 11:15 p.m. A police officer with the Phoenix Police Department was already at the scene assisting Dayzie who had non-life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Phoenix Fire Department said that they were unaware that Quimayousie was still trapped inside the submerged vehicle because Dayzie had been uncooperative with law enforcement officers. By the time rescuers became aware that she was inside the vehicle, Quimayousie had died.

So far, it has still not been determined whether Quimayousie died in the crash or if she drowned.

Dayzie was arrested at the scene of the crash and booked into Maricopa County Jail. He is currently facing a charge of second-degree murder, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to cooperate with police, and other related charges.

Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said in a statement to KTAR that Dayzie had been speeding before crashing into the bank of the canal. The car then rolled onto its roof and becoming submerged in the water.

So far no other details have been released in the case which is still currently under investigation.
