Five-Car Crash Leaves One Dead On I-60

The Department of Public Safety had to shut down a stretch of interstate highway earlier this month after a multi-car crash involving five vehicles left one person dead.

Fox10 in Phoenix reports that the accident happened on the morning of Tuesday, May 14th along Interstate 60 in Tempe when a driver failed to take note of slowed traffic in front of him in the westbound lanes.

The driver, a 49-year-old man, crashed his pickup truck into another vehicle at a high rate of speed. Witnesses to the incident say that he veered across several lanes of traffic before rear-ending sedan.

The initial crash caused a chain reaction with three additional vehicles. The force of the impact caused the driver of the pickup who was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash to be ejected from his truck. Emergency crews pronounced the unidentified man dead at the scene of the crash.

Those inside the other vehicles in the accident suffered only minor injuries.

According to a statement reported by AZCentral, Department of Public Safety spokesperson, Raul Garcia, the man’s death could not have been avoided since he hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt at the time.

So far authorities have determined that the deceased driver was at fault in the accident.
