Saguaro Crashes Through Windshield, Driver Avoids Injury

Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. Every once in a while, you come across the circumstances surrounding an accident that is perhaps a little bit more unusual than almost any other.

Fox 4 in Tucson reported that a motorist in Tucson crashed his vehicle into a saguaro cactus causing part of the giant plant to fall through the windshield of his black sports car.

Pima County Sheriff’s deputies say that the accident happened at approximately 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 10th when a motorist crossed the center median near First Avenue and Agave Drive and struck the saguaro.

Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Jelineo told Fox News that the unidentified driver was uninjured in the accident. Jelineo said he has seen large saguaro cactuses fall over onto vehicles in the past, but he has never seen anything quite like this.

Even Claudia Figueroa, who owns and operates the company Arizona Cactus Expert, which specializes in the maintenance of these desert plants had never seen anything as shocking as this particular accident.

“I have never seen something like that before, but that can kill the person that was driving,” Figueroa said. “They don’t have to be too big to cause a lot of damage. “ She then pointed to a saguaro cactus that looked significantly smaller than the one that crushed the vehicle in the accident. “That one right there, it could be one ton or 1,000 pounds,” she said.

The accident is still under investigation. Authorities are trying to determine whether impairment may have played a role in the crash.
