There are stay at home and shelter in place orders across the country, there are fewer motorists on the road. It may come as no big surprise that during the current COVID 19 pandemic, more people are turning to bicycles as a form of exercise. Because people would instead get out and exercise in a solo activity, such as bicycling, Consumer Reports‘ Jon Linkov reports that more people are taking to the road on two wheels. But taking a bike won’t save you from getting into an accident. Safety precautions are especially necessary now that things are beginning to open back up again.
The AZ Family reports that a bicyclist was struck and killed in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 27th, when it collided with a passenger vehicle.
According to the statement issued by Sgt Mercedes Fortune with the Phoenix Police Department, the accident happened at approximately 4:00 a.m. at the intersection of Bethany Home Road and 19th Avenue. A bicyclist was attempting to cross a street mid-block rather than appropriately at the crosswalk when a westbound motorist hit him.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene of the crash, and the bicyclist was declared dead at the scene. Investigators have withheld the name of the deceased pending notification of family members.
Sgt. Fortune told reporters that the driver of the car stayed at the scene of the fatal crash and fully cooperated with police. Impairment by either drugs or alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the incident.
