John Legend and Juanes Perform at Eloy Detention Center

Wait. Wait. WAIT….

John Legend was where?

And we missed it?!

That’s right, Tucsonans! About an hour outside of Tucson is a sleepy little, no action town of Eloy, both musicians John Legend and Juanes performed last week outside of the Immigration Detention Center…

There about 1,500 immigrants are detained…Why the impromptu performance?

To bring light to the country’s misguided policies and transform America’s criminal justice system was the reason given by the performers and the crowd that joined that day.

Last Wednesday morning was  part of Legend’s campaign against mass incarceration in the United States.

They visited the  for about two hours and then played several of their hit songs, including “All of Me” and “A Dios le Pido,” at the rally calling for an end to the separation of immigrant families and the closure of immigrant detention centers.

“We’ve been a witness to what’s happening so we can tell the world about it,” Legend said outside the detention center.

“We want to learn from the stories of the individuals; we want to affirm their humanity and their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, no matter where they are from.”

For the past few months, the Grammy and Oscar winner has visited several correctional facilities across the country as part of his #FreeAmerica campaign, which advocates for criminal justice reform.

This time around, Legend was joined by Colombian singer Juanes, who has often used to spotlight to speak out in favor of immigrant rights.

“I was just there and my soul breaks,” Juanes said. “It’s very difficult to see people deprived of their freedom. We must give a voice to the voiceless.”

Did anyone see the performance live or participated in the rally?
