Every parent would like to think that when their child goes to school each day, that their safety is assured. Of course, accidents can and do happen on the way to and from school; however, it can be a comfort to know that responsible adults are always nearby to help if a child ever gets into trouble.
According to a story reported by station KOLD in Tucson, that didn’t happen for Serenity Vann of Aurora, Colorado, who hit her head while on a school bus and suffered a concussion. What was frightening to the 8-year-old’s mother is that Serenity’s school bus driver did not call 911 during the emergency. Another 10-year-old student carried the girl’s limp body off the bus and into the family home.
All that Serenity remembers of the incident is that she had been lying on the seat of the school bus when a friend tried to help her up. Serenity lost the grip of her friend’s hand and tumbled backward, hitting her head on the bus window.
Serenity’s mother, Stephanie Vann, said that her daughter laid convulsing on the couch, eyes open and not breathing right. She looked dead, completely dead,” Vann said.
According to Serenity’s sister and two other friends who helped Serenity off the bus and into the family home, the bus driver refused to call 911 and did nothing to get the child into her home. Vann was contacted at work by her elder daughter to tell her of the incident and her little sister’s condition.
What was surprising to Stephanie Vann is that the bus driver just left the injured child without seeing if her parents were home. Vann took her daughter to an area emergency room where the little girl was diagnosed as having a concussion. Vann says after the trauma of her daughter’s injury, she has a hard time sleeping at night.
Since the incident, Serenity is back at school, but she now has a different bus driver. Police are investigating the event, but no charges have been filed because there was no criminal incident involved.
Officials with the Aurora Colorado School District said that while the driver in question did call bus dispatch to inform them of the incident. The district is reportedly reviewing the matter to ensure proper protocols were followed and to determine whether further training of bus drivers is needed.
